Description

Eplus3D was tasked by an aftermarket auto modification manufacturer to revamp the existing Ford Mustang exhaust system using 3D metal additive printing technology. The original exhaust had three separate components responsible for channelling exhaust gases: a connecting rod, a gas heave, and an exhaust pipe. Eplus3D streamlined these components into a single unified part. During the design phase, careful attention was paid to optimising gas flow at different pressures and engine loads. The complex structure of the exhaust pipe could only be produced through 3D printing, as shown in the image. This technology provided the freedom to create improved designs that were unattainable with traditional methods. The outcome was a newly designed part with enhanced gas flow efficiency across a wider range of engine conditions, significantly reducing its size and weight. Eplus3D employed distributed 3D printing, effectively utilising idle equipment in Hangzhou, Beijing, and other service centers. This not only boosted equipment utilisation but also sped up delivery times. The redesigned exhaust system surpasses the performance of the original stock equipment. It achieves better acoustic characteristics and is 67% lighter than the original system, all while exceeding design requirements. Most importantly, the new exhaust system significantly reduces power-robbing back pressure, accommodating a broader range of engine loads and enhancing engine output.
