Description

The German company OECHSLER has created a hiking backpack with 3D-printed shock-absorbing mesh, winning the Red Dot Design Concept Award. This innovative backpack aims to enhance comfort when carrying loads during hikes. The backpack is designed to be ergonomic, lightweight, and efficient in material usage. It was inspired by an AM Program Manager who hiked during his summer vacation and sought a solution to prevent dampness caused by his backpack. Oeschler leveraged HP's Multi Jet Fusion technology and BASF Forward AM's Ultrasint® TPU01 material in the creation of this project. The honeycomb design cushions the backpack against the wearer's back, providing strength, flexibility, and durability with good surface quality. Additive Manufacturing allows for the production of back pads and hip fins in a single piece without the need for gluing or sewing, reducing assembly steps, time, and costs. Additionally, unused Ultrasint® TPU01 powder is reused, and the printed parts are fully recyclable, making OECHSLER's trekking backpack elements an eco-friendly solution.
